چکیده

[1] The Mw 6.6, 26 December 2003 Bam (Iran) earthquake was one of the first earthquakes for which Envisat advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) data were available. Using interferograms and azimuth offsets from ascending and descending tracks, we construct a three-dimensional displacement field of the deformation due to the earthquake. Elastic dislocation modeling shows that the observed deformation pattern cannot be explained by slip on a single planar fault, which significantly underestimates eastward and upward motions SE of Bam. We find that the deformation pattern observed can be best explained by slip on two subparallel faults. Eighty-five percent of moment release occurred on a previously unknown strike-slip fault running into the center of Bam, with peak slip of over 2 m occurring at a depth of 5 km. The remainder occurred as a combination of strike-slip and thrusting motion on a southward extension of the previously mapped Bam Fault 5 km to the east.

Bam earthquake: Surface deformation mea- surement using radar interferometry

On the 26th December 2003 an earthquake with MW=6.5 shook a large area of the Kerman Province in Iran. The epicenter of the devastating earthquake was located near the city of Bam. This paper described the application of differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry (D-INSAR) and ENVISAT ASAR data to map the coseismic surface deformation caused by the Bam earthquake including the interfe...

Estimation of Source Parameters of 2003 Bam (iran) Earthquake from Envisat Sar Images Using Genetic Algorithm Technique

In this paper, we analyze synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferograms derived from Envisat radar data. Use of interferograms from both ascending and descending satellite passes enables us to indicate regions of surface and near-surface slip which is used to modeling procedure. Also we used azimuth offset (AZO) data as additional data. This is horizontal displacement information for earthquake...

Estimation of Earthquake Damage Through Radar Interferometry (Case study: Bam 2003 Earthquake)

The estimate of the damage caused by the earthquake and other natural disasters in the first days after the occurrence of these events can provide a quick damages assessment and help to manage the crisis. Several methods are available to investigate the extent of earthquake’s damage. Optical remote sensing, photogrammetric methods (UAVs and LIDARs), radar interferometry (InSAR) and field observ...

Interferometric Displacement and Damage Assessment for the 2003 Bam Earthquake

We demonstrate that interferometric observations of the Mw6.6 Bam (Iran) earthquake on December 26, 2003 acquired by Envisat-ASAR can not only map surface displacements and constrain fault models, but can also be used for damage mapping using the coherence magnitude. The Bam earthquake was the deadliest earthquake in 2003. An estimated 30000 people were killed and 85% of the buildings in the ar...

Crustal Deformation in Australia Measured by Satellite Radar Interferometry Using ALOS/PALSAR Imagery

The Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS), launched on 24 January 2006, is a Japanese satellite carrying an L-band SAR sensor, namely the PALSAR, which is expected to demonstrate good performance in applications such as crustal deformation measurement, subsidence detection and landslide monitoring. This paper describes a case study of Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (DIn...
